Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max: Everything Announced
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone era. The company unveiled the iPhone Duo alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, introducing one of the biggest changes to the iPhone lineup in years.
By OnelROR News Desk • September 10, 2026 • Technology
Apple’s September 2026 hardware event delivered something iPhone fans had been waiting years to see: the company’s first foldable smartphone.
The new device is called iPhone Duo, and rather than simply shrinking an iPad into a folding chassis, Apple is positioning it as a new premium member of the iPhone family.
The company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing a new generation of Apple silicon, significant camera upgrades and expanded artificial-intelligence capabilities to its flagship smartphones.
THE BIG PICTURE: Apple’s 2026 launch is unusual because the company focused on its premium iPhones. The iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max took center stage, while a standard iPhone 18 was not part of the fall launch.
Meet the iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone
The headline announcement is unquestionably the iPhone Duo. Apple is entering a foldable market already populated by devices from Samsung, Google and other manufacturers, but it is doing so with a distinctly Apple approach.
When closed, the iPhone Duo provides a 5.4-inch exterior display that functions like a conventional smartphone. Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.6-inch interior display, giving users significantly more room for productivity, entertainment and multitasking.
The book-style design allows two applications to appear side by side on the larger display, potentially making tasks such as messaging while browsing the web, reviewing documents, working with email or watching content considerably easier on an iPhone.
A20 Pro Power Inside the Foldable
At the heart of the iPhone Duo is Apple’s new A20 Pro processor. The chip is built using an advanced 2-nanometer manufacturing process and is designed to improve performance, graphics, efficiency and on-device artificial-intelligence workloads.
Apple has also incorporated a vapor-chamber cooling system, an increasingly important feature as mobile processors become more powerful and AI workloads become more demanding.
The Duo also introduces Apple’s latest C2 modem, continuing the company’s effort to bring more of the iPhone’s critical silicon under its own control.
Apple Pencil Comes to iPhone
One of the most surprising additions is Apple Pencil support. Until now, the Apple Pencil has primarily been associated with the iPad family.
The larger folding display changes that equation. When unfolded, the Duo provides enough screen space for handwriting, drawing, annotating documents and other productivity tasks that would be difficult on a traditional iPhone display.
Touch ID Returns — But in a New Form
The iPhone Duo also uses Touch ID integrated into the side button. This approach helps Apple maximize usable display area while keeping biometric authentication easily accessible whether the device is open or closed.
iPhone Duo Price and Release Date
Apple is positioning the Duo firmly at the premium end of the smartphone market. iPhone Duo Details Starting Price $1,999 Outer Display 5.4 inches Inner Display 7.6 inches Processor Apple A20 Pro Storage Up to 2TB Authentication Side-button Touch ID Apple Pencil Supported Preorders October 16, 2026 Availability October 23, 2026
With a starting price of $1,999, the Duo becomes one of the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever introduced.
Apple is also offering configurations with as much as 2TB of storage, an unusually large capacity for a smartphone and another indication that the company sees the Duo as more than a conventional phone.
iPhone 18 Pro Max: Apple’s New Flagship
For buyers who prefer the traditional iPhone design, Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both devices are powered by the same new A20 Pro processor found in the Duo, giving Apple’s premium iPhone lineup a substantial new computing platform for photography, gaming and AI.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.
A Major Camera Upgrade
Photography remains one of Apple’s biggest selling points for the Pro lineup, and the iPhone 18 Pro generation introduces an important change to the main camera.
Apple’s new 48-megapixel main camera features a variable-aperture system. Instead of relying on a single fixed aperture, the camera can adjust how much light enters the lens.
That can give photographers greater control over depth of field while also helping the camera adapt to different lighting conditions.
For everyday users, much of this complexity can be handled automatically. More experienced photographers, however, gain additional creative control when capturing portraits, low-light scenes and other demanding images.
Apple Takes Aim at AI-Generated Images
Apple also used the launch to address one of the fastest-growing challenges in digital photography: determining whether an image is authentic or has been created or manipulated using artificial intelligence.
The company introduced Apple Reference Image, a new photo-authentication technology designed to provide additional information about image authenticity.
Apple is also adding support for technology capable of identifying certain AI-generated or AI-edited images.
WHY IT MATTERS: As generative AI makes realistic fake photographs increasingly easy to produce, tools capable of helping users understand where an image came from could become an important part of smartphone photography.
Apple’s AI Strategy Is Becoming Part of the Hardware
The A20 Pro is not simply about making applications launch faster. Apple is increasingly designing its hardware around artificial-intelligence workloads that can run directly on the device.
Processing more information locally can improve responsiveness while also reducing the amount of personal data that needs to leave the device.
For more demanding AI operations, Apple’s broader privacy strategy continues to emphasize controlled cloud processing rather than sending every request to conventional remote AI servers.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Pricing
Model Starting Price Processor iPhone 18 Pro $1,199 A20 Pro iPhone 18 Pro Max $1,299 A20 Pro iPhone Duo $1,999 A20 Pro
The Pro models are more expensive than their predecessors, continuing a broader trend toward increasingly premium flagship smartphones.
Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup begin September 12, with availability beginning September 18, 2026. The iPhone Duo follows later, with preorders scheduled for October 16 and retail availability on October 23.
What Happened to the Regular iPhone 18?
One of the most interesting parts of Apple’s announcement was something the company didn’t introduce.
There was no standard iPhone 18 alongside the Pro models at the September event.
That represents a significant change from Apple’s traditional launch strategy, where the standard and Pro versions of a new iPhone generation typically arrive together.
For now, consumers looking at Apple’s newest hardware have a much more premium-focused lineup, headlined by the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the entirely new iPhone Duo.
Apple Is Entering Samsung’s Territory
Apple’s arrival in the foldable market creates a fascinating new rivalry.
Samsung has spent years developing successive generations of Galaxy foldable smartphones and helped establish the modern foldable category. Apple, meanwhile, waited until the technology and market had matured before introducing its own interpretation.
That strategy is familiar. Apple was not the first company to make a smartphone, smartwatch, tablet or wireless earbuds, but it has repeatedly entered established categories and used its hardware, software and services ecosystem to bring them to a much larger audience.
The question now is whether the company can repeat that formula with foldable phones.
Is the iPhone Duo Worth $1,999?
That may ultimately be the biggest question surrounding Apple’s new device.
At nearly $2,000 before optional accessories and higher storage configurations, the Duo is clearly not intended to replace every iPhone overnight.
Instead, it appears designed for early adopters, professionals, Apple enthusiasts and customers who want a phone that can transform into a substantially larger mobile workspace.
The ability to run applications side by side, use an Apple Pencil and carry a tablet-like display in a pocket could make the Duo especially appealing to productivity-focused users.
For everyone else, the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains Apple’s more familiar flagship experience at a considerably lower starting price.
The Beginning of a New iPhone Era
The first iPhone transformed the smartphone industry by replacing keyboards and buttons with a large multitouch display. Nearly two decades later, Apple is experimenting with the physical shape of the iPhone itself.
Whether the Duo eventually becomes a mainstream product or remains an ultra-premium category will depend on durability, software support, real-world battery life and, perhaps most importantly, whether consumers believe the larger folding screen justifies its price.
But one thing is clear: Apple’s entry dramatically raises the profile of foldable smartphones.
The competition between Apple, Samsung, Google and other manufacturers is now entering a new phase — and the iPhone is no longer limited to a single slab of glass.
