macOS 27 Golden Gate arrives September 14 for compatible Apple-silicon Macs. The release brings a more refined interface, updates to Safari and deeper system intelligence, but the most consequential change is also the simplest: this generation leaves Intel Macs behind.
That makes the decision unusually clear for some owners and more complicated for others. Before pressing Upgrade Now, verify the hardware, protect your files and make sure the software you rely on is ready.
What changes with macOS 27
Apple presents Golden Gate as a refinement of the design introduced in macOS 26, with improved readability and customization, broader intelligence features and Safari 27. Developers also gain access to Apple’s Foundation Models framework and new Siri-related capabilities.
Feature availability can vary by Mac model, language and region. Some intelligence functions may also require newer Apple silicon. Check the description shown in Software Update for the exact package offered to your computer.
The key compatibility rule
macOS 27 is designed for Apple-silicon Macs. Apple says macOS 26 is the final major macOS release for Intel-based Macs. If “About This Mac” lists an Intel processor, do not expect the macOS 27 upgrade to appear.
Six checks before you install
- Confirm the chip. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Look for a Chip field that names Apple silicon.
- Make a verified backup. Run Time Machine or your usual backup system, then open a few backed-up files to confirm they are readable.
- Update critical apps. Check vendor support for audio and video tools, VPN clients, security software, printer utilities, drivers and plug-ins.
- Leave storage headroom. Follow the space requirement displayed by the installer and keep additional free space for temporary files and future updates.
- Use power and stable internet. Connect a MacBook to power, allow enough downtime and never interrupt the installation.
- Consider a short wait. On a machine essential to paid work, waiting 24 to 72 hours can reveal early compatibility reports from your app vendors.
How to install macOS 27
Open System Settings → General → Software Update. If Golden Gate is available for your Mac, select Upgrade Now, review the information on screen and follow the prompts. The Mac may restart several times.
After the upgrade, test the workflows that matter first: external displays and storage, printers, audio interfaces, browser extensions, password managers and cloud syncing. Recheck privacy and accessibility permissions if an app no longer works as expected, then run another backup once the system is stable.
Who should wait
Delay the upgrade if a hardware or software vendor has not yet confirmed support, if you are in the middle of a deadline, or if you do not have a current backup. Owners of Intel Macs should remain on the newest supported macOS 26 update and follow Apple’s security guidance.
A downgrade can require erasing the Mac and restoring from backup. Preparation is therefore the most valuable part of the process: compatibility first, backup second, upgrade third.
